If I'm being honest, I have felt like I've gotten a little bit off track with this newsletter lately. It’s become a collection of analogies that aim to freshen up some of the ideas we talk about all the time.

But that's not really what this is supposed to be for. It’s supposed to provide accessible, bite-sized strategy pointers for folks at all stages of growth — like little signposts for you that are easy to put to work in the moment.

So for today, to rekindle that intention with a low lift, I’m offering you (and myself) one of my tried and true strategy reminders - probably the line I repeat most often across all of my offerings:

You get to pick.

Life is full of choices and but when it comes to running a business, I think we forget how many are really ours to make. Maybe that's why I so often see people following the patterns around them even when that means doing something they don't actually want to do.

Let me just remind you that as the boss, you get to pick. Want to avoid social media marketing entirely? Cool. Let’s do it. Want to only ever work in person? There’s a way to make that happen. I made a rule that my rates go up a lot when I can’t wear sneakers. Why? Cause I get to pick. Now will each of your decisions create a different outcome? Yes, of course. Cause and effect doesn't disappear just because you're the boss, but the choices are yours to make. Make them on purpose.

Looking for a space to grow your vision? Plywood Place, a co-working space & community in Atlanta’s West End has been an invaluable home for me to be intentional in growing my own businesses.

They currently have dedicated desks & offices available for lease. Perks include mail service, 24-hr access, allowances & discounts on group meeting spaces and more. Reach out to [email protected] to learn more.

Almost every time I tell someone “you get to pick” I follow it up with some version of “there are no wrong answers”. Be clear about what the consequences that each of your options will produce. But once you know what those are, pick whatever you want. You're the boss, remember? I don’t ascribe to very many “shoulds” in entrepreneurship. The right answer is the one that’s most authentic to you and your vision. You get to pick.

Take a second to remind yourself that whether it's about the kind of work that you want to do or how you want to go about doing it - one of the biggest advantages to running your own business is that you write the playbook. So call your plays and then run ‘em!

How to put this to work:

  1. Time to reduce the ick!

Look over your time, money, and personal well being. Consider the services you’re offering, the tasks on your list, and the meetings you have scheduled.

What do you see that you dread or that makes you feel gross?

  2. Are those things required to produce a certain outcome that's important to you?

If no - get rid of them!

If yes, then consider if there’s a different method or tool you can use that works better for you.

🧑‍💻 Let’s get to Work

Join me and the Atlanta solopreneurs for a productive co-working session at Plywood Place on May 21st. We'll tackle our to-do lists with two focused, Pomodoro-style work sprints (15 mins catch-up, 45 mins work x 2). Afterward, anyone interested can grab a drink and continue the conversation. Come for the productivity, stay for the connections!

💻 Take a Browse

Give Arc a go. Arc is a new browser designed to provide a “calmer, more personal internet” and I’ve loved being able to organize my work more intuitively.

Cheering For you!

Cheering for you is one of my strongest skills. Entrepreneurship (and regular life for that matter) is full of big wins and “keep goings”. Share your updates with me so I can cheer for you too!

📣📣 Jamie Cox celebrated 5 years of self-employment this week! She’s a brand strategist on a mission to make brands less boring for service-based entrepreneurs and also the poster child of today’s “you get to pick” theme. We see you Jamie!!! (Also check out her Brand Quick Fix!)

📣📣 CJ completed her bachelor’s degree after juggling a full time course load, a full time job, and the vision stages of a passion project. Talk about “keep goings”. Proud of you CJ! You did it!

Cheering for you,

I’m Laura Green - a strategist empowering creative leaders to build businesses they love. My work focuses providing you actionable insights and customized strategies to find more impact and less friction. I want you to have the clarity, confidence, and energy to make good stuff happen, to drive profit, and to get back to doing the work you love. As for me - I love charts, good beer, nerdy nature books, and sneakers. When I’m not spinning up spreadsheets, you can find me gardening, hanging with my wonderfully wild kids, or sneaking in a nap. ✌️
