Lois wants to send oranges to 12 friends...

how many oranges does she need?

“I know where I want to be, but I can’t possibly be sure we’re anywhere near it.”

This is where very many of my clients find themselves. It’s also my sweet spot. Here’s why:

They know where they want to be - where they want to take their businesses and what they want their lives to look like along the way. But often they know this in a deep-felt, ethereal kind of way that - if we’re being honest - is lacking much specificity or definition. And it’s in this definition that we can learn our proximity to our vision.

Do you remember these word problems?

Sometimes as founders we’re like Lois like: “Yessss! I totally know what I want to do. I want alllll of my friends to have oranges!!” And that. is. ✨beautiful✨. Please send your friends oranges. This is what I want for you.

But then sometimes I ask a question like “How many more oranges do you need to knock this out?” Or you’re getting bored of taping boxes and you want to know how much more you have to do. Or we find sweet Lois (bless her heart) sitting in a pile of oranges and packing tape and boxes and shipping labels and we gotta help her finish this thing. Or God forbid - I find out that Lois has gotten side tracked by launching her own orchard 🌳 (which is also beautiful but really not the goal here). And those are the moments when this quote resonates.

That’s when we’ve got to be able to tease apart the parts from the whole using the specificity and definition I mentioned earlier. For Lois, the high level answer to “How close are you to sending oranges to 12 friends?”, is, “I need to ship to 3 more people.”

There are plenty of moving pieces here. But if Lois’s answer to the “how close are we?” question is that she’s out of tape, that doesn’t give us the answer. It does point to one of the next steps. But buying more tape cannot be Lois’s entire game plan. Are you tracking? (Seriously, please tell me.)

My objective with my clients is to solve the gap between founder vision and what’s happening every day.

I can’t begin to do that - or even know how close you are - until we can clearly define what you want to do. More specifically than “so very many oranges” or “not enough tape”.

So as you wrap up this year & look to 2025, if you feel like Lois - surrounded by a pile of shipping supplies without a clear idea of what to do next - or if you know where you want to be but can’t be sure you’re anywhere near it, I got you.

And by the way, the answer is 120. Truly so many oranges 🍊.

How to put this to work:

  1. Define the big thing you want to do.

Start high level. I don’t mean unspecific, I mean the whole picture: oranges to 12 friends. Other real life examples: School leaders with regulated nervous systems. Refugees experiencing choice & agency in their careers. Helping active people stay active.

  2. Identify each step & the parts that go with each.

Buying oranges. Taping boxes. Applying labels. (Not starting an orchard!) What would these look like for you?

  3. Put those steps in order and know what you need to make each one happen.

Plan these out but don’t let these steps distract you. They are just parts in the whole of the thing.

❤️‍🩹Good Grief

Grief can be lonely and the holiday season doesn’t necessarily help. After unexpectedly losing both parents in one year, my dear friend launched a podcast, Good Grief with Auntie Byrd: a podcast about losing sh!t. Each episode dives into the messy, unique ways we deal with losing people, places, and things. We’ll all face grief more than once in our lives. So why not talk about it & support each other through it? Find it on Spotify or YouTube.
