Have you done the math?

A strategy, by definition, is crafted towards a specific outcome or goal. If you’re not being intentional about the path you’re walking down, you may end up somewhere very different than you think. At the beginning of a growth stage, skipping the math to figure out where you’re headed means that founder-leaders sign themselves up for a “dream” business scenario that doesn’t at all match their dream lifestyle - either because they’ll make a lot less money than they plan to or they’ll be working a lot more hours than they’d like.

Founders either:

➜ Calculate the volume of services they could sell and forget to account for how much (or how little) revenue they actually generate per sale. Or,

➜ They get the revenue right and forget to factor in how much of their own time each of one those sales/clients takes.

Every now and then, I have a client who assumes they’re going to have to hustle at a breakneck pace and then we do the math to find that they’d actually generate more revenue than they need. Lucky for them, we’ve figured that out and planned to scale back before the exhaust themselves unnecessarily.

In any case, at the risk of overstating the obvious, the biggest benefit to working through this early on is that you can make adjustments! Usually this means changing the price point of an offering or optimizing a process to reduce your workload. But it can also mean changing the entire structure of a revenue stream or scrapping it all together. Honestly, the implications are almost endless and they’re all dependent on what you want out of your business and what your non-negotiables are.

How to use this:

Grab this “How good can it get?” calculator that I developed with a few years back with my first ever coaching client who was determined to answer the question “Just how good can this get?”.

It’s not only designed to help you calculate your gross earnings each month & year, it helps you understand how many hours you’re signing up to work each week and what average hourly rate you’re looking at.
