It’s a wild ride out here and these days it feels like we’re all just hanging on.
Up a little: A work session participant signed on her first client for the brand new offering we brainstormed.
Down a little: I asked a coaching client about her progress on a project and she burst into tears.
Up a lot: A nonprofit director tripled his annual budget for 2025 in one meeting following our intensive.
Down a lot: A designer lost her biggest contract. The one that floated her business. She’s had to let everyone go and decide how (if??) to rebuild.
If we’re going to keep riding this roller coaster, it’s going to have to be for good reason. Here are the two reasons that I remind people of most often:
🎢🎢 ONE: Keep going because it’s a great shot at carving out a life you love.
If you were going to be stressed and anxious and overextended from your work, you could (probably) make a lot more money being stressed and anxious and overextended for someone else. The reason any of us choose this entrepreneur journey is because we believe the crazy idea that we might be able to do it our own way. Someone said to me “If being an entrepreneur was easy, no one would work at a bank”. Shout out to the bankers out there but my guess is you wanted something different. Keep going so you can build on your own terms.
🎢🎢 TWO: Keeping going because we need you to.
I believe that the cross section between what you care deeply for (the things that make your heart sing or that make your heart break) and the skills you’re best at is why you’re here. It’s what the world needs from you - what we need from you. You have something to offer that no one else can - no matter how high or low the stakes: Someone to create safe spaces for kids to play? We need that. Someone to help minority creatives tell diverse stories beautifully? Yes!! Please!! A passionate bag-maker? We’re better for having her. The most caring solar panel sales guy around? We need that guy. (These are all real people be tee dub. I love my job.) Keep going to do the things that you’re uniquely suited to do
How to put this to work:
Daydream on purpose
Building a life you love doesn’t usually happen by accident. Be thoughtful and specific about where you’re hoping to end up. Maybe plug some numbers into my “How Good Can It Get” calculator to help you be sure you’re building in the right direction.
Re-center your vision
Remind yourself of the things you’re great at and the work you love doing. Make sure you can point to where these pieces show up in your work. If you can’t find them, make adjustments. It doesn’t have to be earth shattering stuff - just think on what’s energizing to you. Revisit the issue on “the soul of the thing” if you feel stuck.
Keep Going.

Each month, Jessica Lackey goes deep teaching a concept for growing expertise-based businesses. She includes topics like building your network, pricing philosophies, addressing your business foundations, organizing your ideas, and setting better goals. Why?
